My mother, LaVerne, is 81 years old — and to so many, she’s simply known as “Nana.” And now because of her declining health she needs our help and support.
For decades, she has been a source of love, stability, and care not only for our family, but for countless others in her Bronx community. She opened her home to foster children, welcomed in neighborhood kids who needed a safe space, and treated everyone who walked through her door like family. To this day, many still call her “Nana” — because that’s exactly who she’s always been.
In 2018, LaVerne underwent a life-saving lung transplant. It gave us more time with her — time she used the way she always has: loving deeply, giving generously, and continuing to be the heart of our family. Because of that transplant, she was able to meet her youngest grandchild, born during the pandemic — a moment we will forever be grateful for.
Today, she is facing rapidly declining health, and a new challenge that is putting her home and stability at risk.
LaVerne lives in the multi-family home in the Bronx that she inherited from her mother — a home filled with decades of memories, love, and community. In an effort to maintain the property, she rented out a unit. Unfortunately, the tenant has not paid rent in over two years.
At 81 years old and in fragile health, she is now left carrying the financial burden of the home without the support she depended on. She is in need of almost round the clock care due to her rapid decline. The cost of maintaining the property, combined with legal and living expenses, has become overwhelming.
We are asking for help to:
• Cover essential living and medical-related expenses
• Help with housing costs and upkeep of her home
• Assist with legal and financial relief related to the non-paying tenant
• Ensure she can remain safe, stable, and cared for during this stage of her life
If you know LaVerne, you know she has spent her entire life giving to others without hesitation. Now, we’re hoping to surround her with that same love and support.
Any contribution — big or small — means more than we can express. And if you’re unable to donate, sharing this page would mean the world to our family.
Thank you for helping us support our Nana.
With love,
Chylia & Latisha
