Last Friday, Myanmar was struck by a powerful earthquake, causing widespread devastation. Today, March 31, it is estimated that at least 1,700 people have been killed and more than 3,400 people injured– a preliminary casualty toll that is certain to rise as the full extent of the catastrophe becomes known in the coming days.

Since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar has been involved in a civil war, with particularly intense fighting in the region near the earthquake’s epicenter. Even now, amid emergency response efforts, reports indicate that the military continues to carry out airstrikes.

Not only does this hinder the delivery of much-needed aid, but it also underscores the military government's blatant disregard for the people of Myanmar in this desperate time.

With the regime unwilling and unable to provide meaningful relief, it is more critical than ever to support independent efforts to get life-saving aid and assistance into the hardest-hit areas.
