The Invisible Challenge: My Journey with Environmental Illness

Everything is fine ...

Until it isn't.

What might start, at first, as a brush with nasal or sinus congestion, eye irritation, wheezing, coughing or difficulty breathing, might well be initial warning signs of something much, much worse.

In the spring of last year, I was seen in the ER for nausea and vertigo. Additional issues with "brain fog" resulted in brain imaging (CT scan and MRI), with an additional referral for neurocognitive testing. After a yearlong delay, I was cleared by Neurology as being "average to above average" with no apparent signs of dementia (thank God!). Nevertheless ... symptoms persist.

These include vertigo, nausea, and chronic fatigue.

I have since moved from my prior water-damaged home. I've also contracted care with a provider who specializes in Environmental Medicine and who assures me of a swift return to wellness. I'm excited about the return to school as a teacher in the second grade. These are all good things!

Ongoing care is expensive, however. Initial charges for prior treatment came to $895. Environmental testing of my home for air quality ran another $425. Mycotoxin testing (for me) added another $385 to the tally. And there's more ... lab work ... supplements ... it just goes on and on.

Charges this summer for my first appointment with the new Wellness Center ran $542. Recommended supplements come to $330 (per month). While the amount referenced in this campaign, $10K, causes even me to gasp, this was the suggested starting point recommended by GoFundMe, I intend that this will cover my medical expenses and supplements for the next 12 months.

I'll provide, of course, updates on my progress and how the funds are being used.

Let's face it. Creating a campaign -- for oneself -- regardless of the circumstances is embarrassing. However, if any of this story touches your heart, I would be ever so grateful for your sharing, no matter the level. As I've said before, even small amounts add up to make a big difference. And if unable to participate? Just sharing this link would be very appreciated. One never knows who in their network might be drawn to help.

Thank you for supporting my journey to recovery and a return to work with youngsters in the career I love. Your kindness means the world to me!
