Who am I?

My name is Christina Letness - aka, Peaches.  I’m 29, and currently a successful scholar attending Normandale Community College (Normandale Website)  in Bloomington, MN, studying in the Engineering Broad Field Program (Normandale Engineering Broad Field). This spring I will graduate with an Associates of Science degree.  My next step is attending the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering (U of M CSE)  for the Fall of 2020, where I will complete my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa (honor’s society) and Mu Alpha Theta (math club). I work as a tutor at Normandale and also volunteered in the Math Center my last two semesters. I am part of a cohort called the Academy of Math and Science, which includes a scholarship and bi-weekly participation with the cohort and meetings with my counselor. I currently carry a 3.95 GPA.

What is it for?

I have been nominated to attend ISLP (International Scholar Laureate Program) for Engineering and Technology (ISLP website)  from May 21 – 28, 2020 . This extraordinary opportunity will bring me to New Zealand to attend career-focused delegations, seminars, and global networking. I will follow a curriculum (ISLP sample schedule)  that will introduce me to international technologies and studies that are specific to what I’m passionate about: the betterment of our environment. Going to New Zealand (New Zealand travel guide)  will take me to another level in pursuing my career and will advance my knowledge and understanding in ways that I would not be able to without it. It is an amazing opportunity and a privilege to be invited to this program.

What do I need?

The cost of tuition is $3,595.00. This pays for room-and-board, daily meals, transportation within the country, advisors / staff, curriculum materials, and the program itself. However, it does not include airfare, which I have priced at anywhere between $1,300.00 and $1,800.00, so I am focusing on raising a total of $5,500.00. In addition to fundraising, I am applying for a scholarship through ISLP, however, it awards a limited amount of money (only up to 30% of tuition) to only a select number of applicants.

As a full-time student working 15+ hours a week as a server, this GoFundMe page offers me an exceptional opportunity to raise the necessary assets in a short period of time in order to complete this important leg in my career path. But more importantly, I have within my grasp the ability to contribute to the advancement of women employed in the vital STEM industries. This is more than a contribution to me; it is an opportunity to participate in the valuable diversification of a male-dominated field (STEM).

I look forward to your support and thank-you for your consideration and contribution.
