My name is Bertha Rubio, and I am creating this GoFundMe for my little sister, Martha Taylor, who is going through an unimaginable season of pain, loss, and sudden life-changing challenges that have affected our entire family.

Martha has always been a hardworking, kind, and devoted mother to her 9-year-old daughter. She is the type of person who always put everyone else first — working full time, caring for her child, and helping those around her with a generous heart.

On March 31st, everything changed.

Martha woke up with intense chest pain and weakness in her legs. Feeling something was terribly wrong, she drove over an hour to the hospital. By the time she arrived, she felt her left side beginning to shut down. Within just three hours of being admitted, nearly 90% of her body became paralyzed. She could move only her head and neck. She was rushed to the ICU as doctors ran countless tests to find the cause.

Eventually, they discovered that her spinal cord was severely inflamed. She was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a rare autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the spinal cord. Doctors believe this was triggered by pneumonia she had suffered just a month earlier. This devastating condition affects only about one in a million people in the United States.

Martha spent three long months between hospitals and inpatient rehabilitation. During this time, she was denied Medicaid multiple times, and unfortunately, her condition did not show the improvement we all prayed for. With mounting medical bills and little support, our family made the difficult decision to bring her home so we could care for her ourselves.

Since then, we have become her nurses, her caregivers, and her physical and occupational therapists — doing everything in our power to help her heal, move, and regain strength. It has been a heartbreaking, exhausting, and emotionally overwhelming journey.

Today, Martha is home with no medical assistance, unable to work, and facing an enormous amount of medical expenses. However, by the grace of God and through the love and dedication of her family, she is beginning to show small but meaningful improvements in her mobility and strength.

She still has a long road ahead.

The funds raised through this campaign will go toward:

• Pain medication

• Medical and hygiene supplies (adult diapers, wound bandages, wipes, etc.)

• Home modifications so she can move safely

• Therapy tools to aid her recovery

• Ongoing care needs and transportation to appointments

We believe wholeheartedly in Martha’s recovery. We believe in miracles. And above all, we believe God is not finished with her story yet. But we cannot do this alone.

El 31 de marzo, todo cambió.

Martha despertó con un intenso dolor en el pecho y debilidad en sus piernas. Sintiendo que algo estaba muy mal, condujo más de una hora hasta el hospital. Cuando llegó, comenzó a sentir que el lado izquierdo de su cuerpo se apagaba. En tan solo tres horas después de ser admitida, casi el 90% de su cuerpo quedó paralizado. Solo podía mover la cabeza y el cuello. Fue trasladada de emergencia a la UCI mientras los médicos realizaban innumerables pruebas para encontrar la causa.

Finalmente, descubrieron que su médula espinal estaba severamente inflamada. Fue diagnosticada con Mielitis Transversa, una rara condición autoinmune en la que el sistema inmunológico ataca la médula espinal. Los médicos creen que esto fue provocado por una neumonía que sufrió apenas un mes antes. Esta devastadora condición afecta aproximadamente a una de cada un millón de personas en los Estados Unidos.

Martha pasó tres largos meses entre hospitales y rehabilitación. Durante este tiempo, fue rechazada varias veces para Medicaid y, lamentablemente, su condición no mostró la mejoría por la que todos orábamos. Con las facturas médicas acumulándose y con poco apoyo, nuestra familia tomó la difícil decisión de llevarla a casa para poder cuidarla nosotros mismos.

Desde entonces, nos hemos convertido en sus enfermeros, cuidadores y terapeutas físicos y ocupacionales — haciendo todo lo posible para ayudarla a sanar, moverse y recuperar fuerzas. Ha sido un camino desgarrador, agotador y emocionalmente abrumador.

Hoy, Martha está en casa sin asistencia médica, sin poder trabajar y enfrentando una enorme carga de gastos médicos. Sin embargo, por la gracia de Dios y mediante el amor y la dedicación de su familia, está comenzando a mostrar pequeñas pero significativas mejoras en su movilidad y fuerza.

Aún le queda un largo camino por recorrer.

• Suministros médicos e higiénicos (pañales para adulto, vendajes para heridas, toallitas, etc.)

• Modificaciones en el hogar para que pueda moverse con seguridad

Creemos de todo corazón en la recuperación de Martha. Creemos en los milagros. Y sobre todo, creemos que Dios aún no ha terminado su obra en su vida. Pero no podemos hacerlo solos.
