My name is Zarina Crockett and I’m a Black trans woman living in San Francisco.
This June, I’m undergoing Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS)—a pivotal step in my transition that will bring my outward appearance into alignment with my true self. While my insurance graciously covers the surgical costs, it doesn't account for the essential time off work I need to heal and recover fully.
As a full-time film student maintaining a 4.0 GPA, balancing academics and life has been a journey of resilience. FFS isn't just a medical procedure; it's a life-affirming necessity. Studies have shown that gender-affirming surgeries can lead to a 42% reduction in psychological distress and a 44% decrease in suicidal ideation . This surgery is about more than aesthetics—it's about safety, mental well-being, and the freedom to navigate the world authentically.
Why I’m Fundraising
I’m reaching out to my community for support to cover the following expenses during my three-month recovery period:
- Living Expenses: $23,000 to offset income lost from being unable to work.
- Rent: $5,000 to cover two months of rent at $2,500/month.
- Bills: $3,000 to manage essential bills at $500/month for six months.
- Transportation: $8,000 to purchase a reliable car, get insured and licensed, ensuring safe and accessible mobility post-surgery.
