My name is Shannon Cavarocchi. I’m a professional photographer originally from Hawai‘i, now based in Australia. My photographic work centres on personal, long-form projects that explore connection and identity.

'Song for the Siren' is a photographic project that began as a way to understand my own experiences of womanhood, healing, and the intricate intersection of body, identity, and human connections. Shot on medium format film, the work traces my journey of self-understanding through the act of looking outward. Through portraiture, landscape, and symbolic imagery, I tried to capture the subtle gestures and emotional undercurrents that defined what being a woman meant to me.

The project began as a deeply personal process and an attempt to understand and move through lived experiences by making photos. In turning the camera toward myself, I began to recognise the importance of centring myself within my personal narrative. Through self-portraiture, I rebuilt a sense of agency and connection to my body. As I shared this process with other women, the work naturally expanded into a collaborative space grounded in trust, openness, and mutual recognition.

Photographically, I work slowly and intentionally, using medium-format film. I often spend extended time with the women I photograph, allowing space for comfort, conversation, and collaboration to shape the image-making process.

Your support for this project will go toward the publishing of 'Song for the Siren'. The photobook will bring together portraiture, self-portraiture, and landscape into a quiet, immersive sequence that reflects both personal and collective experiences of growth, resilience, and connection.

Producing a photobook of this scale involves significant upfront costs, including editing, design, printing, and binding. I am actively applying for grants and other funding sources, but I am also opening this space for those who feel connected to the work and would like to support bringing it into the world.

Estimated costs include:
  • Editing and sequencing
  • Book design and layout
  • Printing and binding
  • Production and materials
  • Shipping
Total estimated budget: €19,000–€22,000

Every contribution, no matter the size, directly supports the making of this photobook. If you’re not in a position to donate, sharing this page means just as much. Your interest in this work means a lot and ensures that these stories, rooted in lived experience and shared trust, can exist beyond the moment they were created and reach others who may see themselves reflected in them.

I am incredibly grateful for any support, and in the future, I hope to offer small gestures of thanks, such as acknowledgments, prints, or copies of the book once it is ready for publishing.

Above all, your support in helping bring this work into the world truly means everything to me.
