This is the story of my incredible mother, Joan “Jody” Newsom, just 49 years young. She is a devoted single mother to my 14-year-old brother and 17-year-old sister, a hardworking professional in Human Resources for the State of Indiana, and a determined student pursuing her master’s degree at Indiana Wesleyan University.
At the beginning of 2025, Jody began experiencing severe abdominal pain. She visited multiple doctors, even the emergency room, only to be dismissed without proper tests—she was told it was “something simple,” and advised to take something over the counter. But Jody knew something was deeply wrong. She fought to be heard and finally found a gynecologist willing to investigate further. Exploratory surgery revealed something abnormal, leading to a diagnosis of endometrial cancer on May 1, 2025.
By then, a 3-pound tumor the size of a brick had surrounded several organs, making immediate surgery impossible. Radiation was planned, but an MRI uncovered that the cancer had spread to her lungs, shifting her treatment to chemotherapy.
On June 11, during a chemo session, Jody suddenly struggled to breathe, broke into a sweat, and couldn’t catch her breath. She was rushed to the ICU, where she remained under close monitoring. Though she is no longer in ICU, complications persist, preventing further treatments at this time.
Financially, Jody had stability thanks to her job and health insurance. But devastatingly, her employer informed her that she was just two days shy of qualifying for Short-Term Disability, denying her pay and cutting off her health insurance at the end of June. Now, she faces losing her home, as her landlord has issued an eviction warning unless payment is made by the end of the month.
One year ago, we lost both of Jody’s parents, my grandparents, within three weeks of each other. Now, we are facing yet another heartbreaking battle. My mother has been fighting so hard, but she cannot do this alone.
We are asking for your help. Every donation, big or small, will make a life-changing difference in keeping Jody stable, housed, and able to continue her treatment. If you cannot donate, please share this page to help spread awareness.
Thank you for taking the time to read her story. Your kindness, prayers, and support mean everything to our family.
