2023 has been a challenging year for my mom, Louise Keene. She has been in and out of the hospital multiple times this year dealing with a GI Tract issue that has stumped multiple doctors and specialists. In attempts to solve her GI Tract issue, doctors have removed her gallbladder, placed a stint in her celiac artery and have tried several different cocktails of drugs. So far, none of the various procedures, drugs or therapy have solved the problem. Additionally, over the year she has dropped more than 50 pounds and has lost most of her strength and the ability to walk.

On Tuesday October 17, my mom fell and broke her hip. Luckily, an orthopedic surgeon was able to repair her hip, but she will require extensive physical therapy. She is currently staying at and receiving physical therapy at a skilled nursing facility in Richmond, VA. Additionally, since her surgery she has developed a severe pressure ulcer that has resulted in a considerable amount of pain. Due to the severity of the pressure ulcer, she cannot return to her assisted living facility. Effective November 8, her insurance provider will no longer cover the expense of the skilled nursing facility and physical therapy. At this point, there is no anticipated discharge date from the skilled nursing facility. The discharge is dependent upon when the pressure ulcer is manageable by her assisted living facility.
