In 2017, on Thanksgiving Day, our lives changed forever. On the way to a family dinner, another car crossed into our lane and hit us head-on. My mom was rushed to the trauma unit at Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Doctors performed emergency surgery due to internal bleeding, but complications caused severe damage to her small intestine and vagal nerve. Her body was so swollen that her abdomen had to be left open for seven days to prevent further complications. Since that day, nothing has been the same. My mom now suffers from short bowel syndrome, which means she cannot properly digest food. Even small amounts of solid food can cause dangerous blockages. Her daily life revolves around pain, fatigue, and always needing immediate access to a bathroom. She has been unable to work and live a normal life. To survive, she depends on TPN (total parenteral nutrition), which delivers nutrients through a PICC line directly into her bloodstream. While this keeps her alive, it puts tremendous strain on her body and makes her extremely vulnerable to infections—one of which nearly took her life. As if that wasn’t enough, she has now been diagnosed with stage 4 triple-negative breast cancer. My mom is one of the strongest people I know, but she cannot fight this battle alone.
