Hi friends,
My mom, Maria Elena, is scheduled for surgery next month after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Thankfully, the success rate is high—but unfortunately, due to her being undocumented, she doesn’t qualify for Social Security, healthcare, or other public assistance.
I’m reaching out to ask for support from friends and family as we prepare for her recovery. She will be out of work for at least two months, and at 65 years old, working in intensive labor as a house cleaner, I honestly don’t know if she’ll be able to return to the work she’s done for so long.
My mom has lived in New York City since 1999. She’s paid taxes every year without ever receiving benefits. It’s a deeply frustrating system to navigate, especially now that she is an elder. I’m asking for your solidarity as we go through this unexpected and challenging time.
Your support would give her a small safety net—relief from the stress of needing to rush back to work—and allow her to focus on healing. The funds raised will go toward paying her her rent, food, bills, and transportation for two months as she begins radiation treatment after surgery.
We don’t have family here in the U.S., and navigating this as her sole caretaker has been incredibly difficult—emotionally, financially, and logistically. Any donation, share, or prayer is greatly appreciated.
You can donate through here or though Venmo @Lucasgonnzo
Thank you for reading and for being with us during this time.
With gratitude,
