Over the last six months my world has been shaken by serious illness and sudden loss within my family. Cancer, unexpected bereavement and major health issues discovered only after surgery have been a stark reminder of how fragile life is and how quickly everything can change.

I count myself incredibly lucky that, so far, nobody I love has needed the support of our local hospice. But I know, sadly, that one day someone I care about deeply may need that care, comfort and dignity at the hardest time of their life. When that day comes, I want to know that the hospice is there, fully resourced and ready to wrap its arms around families like mine.

That is why I am taking on the Flawed Hero Marathon at the end of April.

I love a challenge, and this feels like an epic one. Every mile I run will be in honour of those we have lost, those who are still fighting, and the families trying to hold everything together around them. I count my blessings daily that I have my health, and if I can use it to help those less fortunate, then I will.
