Help Us Tell the Story of DC and Its Fight Against Gentrification

Washington, D.C., once proudly known as "Chocolate City," has long been defined by its rich Black culture, deep community ties, and unique historical legacy. For decades, the city’s identity has been uniquely shaped by its majority Black population, who have played a pivotal role in building and defining its rich culture and history. But now, that legacy is at risk of disappearing as gentrification rapidly reshapes neighborhoods, displaces residents, and erases the culture that has made D.C. the vibrant, soul-filled city it is today.

Our short documentary aims to capture the stories of the long-time Black residents who have lived through this transformation. Through intimate interviews and community narratives, this film will preserve the legacy of “Chocolate City” while shedding light on the harsh realities of displacement and cultural erasure.

Why This Story Matters

This is more than just a local issue—it’s a global one. Around the world, gentrification is displacing communities and threatening the identities of cities that have been built on generations of culture and history. Through the lens of Washington, D.C., we hope to show how the destruction of a community’s cultural heritage has devastating psychological, emotional, and even physical impacts. But we also want to celebrate the resilience, innovation, and joy that still thrive within D.C.'s Black community, even in the face of these challenges.

By supporting this documentary, you’re helping to amplify the voices of the people who know and love Washington, D.C. best: its natives. These are the stories that need to be told. Stories that are too often overlooked by mainstream media but are essential in the fight to preserve our cultural and social fabric.

Where Your Donations Will Go

We are working on a lean budget and need your help to make this documentary a reality. Every dollar raised will go directly toward production, post-production, and marketing costs. Here’s how we’ll use your support:

Production Costs: Help us cover the cost of transportation, equipment, and accommodation of our small, dedicated crew to capture these vital stories on film.
Post-Production Costs: Your donations will go toward editing, color grading, and sound mixing to ensure this documentary is polished and ready for audiences.
Marketing & Distribution: We want this film to reach as many people as possible, which means organizing community screenings, submitting to festivals, and creating promotional materials to share the message far and wide.

Why We Need Your Help

Independent films like this often don’t get the funding or resources they deserve. By contributing to this campaign, you’re not just helping to fund a film—you’re helping to preserve a piece of history, a community’s identity, and a legacy that must not be forgotten. You’re also joining a global conversation about gentrification, displacement, and how we can protect the soul of cities around the world.

Thank you for your support! Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to bringing the story of "Chocolate City" to the screen. Please share this campaign with your friends, family, and anyone who believes in the power of storytelling and community.

Sincerely,
Ruth Tedla (Director & Producer)
