Spanning the years before, during, and after seven years of missionary life in Ghana, West Africa, “My Father, The Façade of God” documents my journey to understand and reveal the truth about my childhood and the man at the center of it. My father was widely known as a missionary, pastor, and trusted leader. Behind that carefully cultivated public image, however, was a man who manipulated, deceived, and abused those closest to him.
Through photographs, documents, recordings, and personal testimony, I am working to reconstruct the world I grew up in as a missionary kid and reveal the hidden reality that existed behind the façade.
As I work through therapy and this next stage of recovery, I have made the decision to turn toward my past rather than continue running from it. Choosing to tell this story has become one of the most meaningful decisions of my life. What began as an attempt to understand my own childhood has grown into a larger project about trauma, memory, family, religion, public image, and what it means to reclaim your own story after years of silence.
I’m currently creating this documentary independently, and every stage of the project is being produced and managed personally. So far, bringing it to life has required countless hours of preserving and digitizing thousands of photographs, documents, and recordings, searching for new information, reconnecting with people from my childhood, teaching myself new creative tools, and creating everything from the ground up. Every stage of that process has been an investment of my time, energy, and resources.
My goal is not simply to tell the story of what happened. I hope “My Father, The Façade of God” can contribute to larger conversations about institutional religious trauma, childhood and familial sexual abuse, mental health, and the complicated process of recovery. Most importantly, I hope that telling my story can help other survivors feel less alone in theirs.
This fundraiser will help give me the stability to continue treatment while dedicating the time and resources necessary to pursue this project. Funds raised will help with:
* Equipment, software, archival materials, and other resources necessary to create the documentary and cover expenses that arise as the project develops.
Whether you choose to donate, share this fundraiser, follow the project’s progress, contribute information or materials that may help me tell this story, or simply offer words of encouragement, every form of support would mean more to me than I can express.
Thank you for helping me continue both this journey and the work of telling this story.
