My dad lost his father, Inés Flores, this morning. I met my grandpa once, and not being able to meet him as an adult will be one of my biggest life's regrets. I don't have the means to fly to Puebla, Mexico for my abuelito's funeral, but I'd like to help my abuelita and dad during this time. It pains me to be so far and not able to offer more support. Losing my grandfather obviously hurts, especially because I'll never have the chance to know him. But I've gotten closer to my dad and I can't imagine what my dad is going through. 

My dad and I had a volatile and fragile relationship growing up. I moved out and we both had time to heal and grow. He had his own realizations and process. I had mine.

I learned to step into his shoes, look at the world through the eyes of a little boy who had the whole world thrown at him and no one to hold him. He became a father who would one day hold his own children despite not being taught love like this. My dad still messes up sometimes, but he makes up for his mistakes now. He was the one I called to break the news of my divorce, the worst moment in my life. I love my dad and our mended relationship is something I'll never take for granted.

My dad didn't fully get that chance with his own dad. My grandma is left alone in Puebla now after my abuelito's passing. I want to give my dad the peace of mind that he can say goodbye to his dad one last time without worrying about money. I'd also like to send money to my grandma so that she doesn't have to deal with everything on her own, besides the support my dad and his siblings will give her. I'm a full-time student, working part-time, and I'm still reeling from the financial effects of my divorce. I can't afford to help and it pains me.
