My dad recently underwent major brain surgery to remove a tumor that was wrapped around his carotid artery and compressing on his brainstem and optic nerve. Although the surgery was performed by Dr. Hsu, there is still some tumor remaining in his optic nerve, which means he will need additional follow-up and most likely another brain surgery. This has been an incredibly emotional and uncertain time for our family as we navigate his recovery and what lies ahead. There is uncertainty if he will be able to see in the next few months or if he will be able to return to work as a FedEx driver.

Before all of this, my dad was a very independent man and the sole provider for our household. Now, he is dependent on us for daily living—including walking, vision, and communication. As you can imagine, this has been difficult for our family because we have witnessed him drastically change in less than two weeks. My mom was also working, but she has now stopped so she can take care of my dad during his recovery. My sister has had to take time off work to help my mom care for my dad due to his large stature, as he needs extra assistance with mobility and daily activities. With both of my parents unable to work and my sister missing work, we are struggling to cover the mounting medical bills, ongoing care, and everyday expenses. The costs from the surgery and the need for future treatment are overwhelming, and without any income, it’s become even more difficult to make ends meet.
