Earlier this week, father went into the ER due to shortness of breath. He had trouble breathing while he slept for a few weeks but brushed it off until then.

After countless tests and dozens of nurses, they told us my father's heart was extremely weak and enlarged. A normal, healthy ejection fraction (the % of blood pumped out with each beat) is 50% to 70%. My dad's EF was 35%.

Not only was his heart extremely weak, but through these tests, doctors and cardiologists found that two of his major arteries were blocked. One at 90%, and the other at 75%. The symptoms he had gone in for had nothing to do with these blockages, but the cardio team said he was lucky that he came in, he was at risk for a heart attack. They scheduled two bypasses to be done, and he currently sits in the ICU- the nurses we spoke to say he is responding well but the recovery time can take up to three months.

This has been hard on all of our family, but especially my mother. My father is the sole provider for the two of them. My mother has been at the hospital by his side nonstop since we arrived to the ER that first night. It has been difficult to see how much stress this has put the two of them under. Financially, emotionally, and physically, this has been a major toll on them, especially beginning the new year.
