Mushi is a 15 year old, 3 pound, long-haired chihuahua with a huge personality.
Mushi was seized by the state of Kansas from a puppy mill with hundreds of other small dogs, and brought to the animal shelter where I was employed in 2009. It was love at first sight, and I took her home with me that same night after work, just to foster her through her myriad health issues.
My tiny college apartment didn’t allow dogs, so I didn’t think I would be able to adopt her. But Mushi was less than 3 pounds; smaller than my guinea pig at the time, and so I was able to make it work and adopted her that same year.
15 years later, and Mushi and I are still inseparable. She is my little soulmate.
In November of last year, Mushi was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease after having her bloodwork checked before a dental procedure. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, including a very expensive five night hospitalization. But for the most part, she has responded very well to treatment, and has had many, many more good days than bad ones, surprising everyone, including her veterinarians.
However, last week she started to decline, and was hospitalized at the ER vet again this past Tuesday, March 11th.
They let me come visit her every day, and she is being very brave and gradually improving, but needs more time on continuous IV fluids, medications, and monitoring before it would be safe for her to come back home.
I used all of my savings that I had built
up since her last hospitalization for the deposit on this current stay, and it is going to run out at 7pm tonight, March 13th.
Mushi would greatly benefit from getting to stay in the hospital for another couple days, and I want to give her the best chance possible to recover once she gets home.
I’m so grateful already for the extra quality time I’ve gotten with her, and I am
hoping for even more happy days.
Her four rescue dog siblings, four rescue cat siblings, and two foster dog siblings and I all miss her here at home. ❤️
She is such a little trooper, and is trying her absolute best to get back to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read about Mushi’s story!
