Hi!
Before anything else, I want to thank those of you who helped my grandmother and our family earlier this year after the Eaton Fire. Your care and generosity meant everything, and it’s with that same spirit of community that I’m reaching out now (with much better news, of course).
My name is Jasminne Morataya, and I was just hired as an first-year English teacher at George K. Porter Middle School’s Gifted Magnet in Granada Hills. After navigating many challenging seasons, especially the deep sense of grief and disconnection I experienced following the fire, this moment feels like the meaningful culmination of years of quiet efforts and secret hopes.
As a practicing artist, writer, and first-year teacher, I’m working to set up a classroom that is both safe and expansive. I’m also hoping to help set up and steward a small makerspace on campus where students can experiment, tinker, and build: through zines, visual art, or collaborative media & small publishing projects.
Like most public school teachers, I’m starting with no stipend and very little lead time, as school starts next Thursday. I’m hoping for support as I gather the supplies that will make this space possible.
Your donation will help provide:
- Essential classroom supplies (notebooks, paper, writing tools, organizers)
- Furniture, rugs, posters, and lighting
- Art and media supplies for creative student projects and the beginnings of a makerspace
- Snacks, first aid, and hygiene products
- HEPA filters and masks to support a safe and healthy classroom environment
I’m grateful for any way you’re able to support, whether through donations or simply sharing this with others. It’s an honor to finally begin this journey while supported by such a thoughtful and creative community.
