Our Brookland, DC daycare community is coming together to support someone who has given so much to our children—our beloved teacher, Ms. Jahayra, whose husband is now facing prostate cancer for the second time. As he undergoes treatment and is unable to work, she is preparing to reduce her hours so she can care for him and get him to his many appointments. This has placed a heavy financial strain on their family during an already overwhelming time. We’re hoping to ease that burden by raising funds to help with their monthly expenses and give them one less worry. Any contribution, big or small, will make a meaningful difference for a family that has always cared deeply for ours.

Here is her story:

My husband, Juan Carlos Torres, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022. He underwent surgery and completed two years of treatment. Since then, he has been attending regular check-ups every three months as recommended by his doctors.

A month ago, we received the heartbreaking news that the cancer has returned. Juan Carlos will now begin an intensive treatment plan that includes injections, medication, and radiation therapy. The process is expected to last about two months, although the exact length will depend on how his body responds.

Juan Carlos is the father of three children, ages 22, 17, and 10. He works in construction, but due to the strength of these treatments and their side effects, he will be unable to work during this period. I will also be taking time off from my job to support him, care for him, and accompany him to his hospital visits.

We are doing everything we can to stay strong during this difficult time, and any support or assistance is deeply appreciated. Thank you for helping our family as Juan Carlos fights this battle once again.
