Help Ms. Aveona Recover After a Serious Climbing Accident

Many families in our school community know Ms. Aveona as a caring, joyful, and dedicated teacher who has supported and inspired so many of our children.

On Sunday, March 8, while bouldering at Planet Granite, she suffered a serious fall, dislocating her right elbow and severely fracturing her right ankle. Her fibula was broken and required surgery with plates.

Because of hospital capacity issues, it took four days for surgery to be scheduled, and she was eventually transferred to a hospital in South San Francisco where doctors were finally able to perform the surgery on Wednesday.

Her ankle required a procedure to realign the fractured fibula and stabilize it with plates and screws. Doctors have also shared that a second surgery will be needed later to remove one of the screws once the ankle has healed further.

The road to recovery will unfortunately be long:
612 weeks of surgical recovery
Up to 6 months before she can walk normally again
• For now she must remain non-weight-bearing, followed by a long course of physical therapy

Since her apartment has stairs, she cannot safely return home right away and will need to spend time in a rehabilitation facility to regain strength and mobility.

To make matters even harder, Ms. Aveona is navigating this largely on her own here in the U.S. without nearby family to help care for her. Many of us know how independent and positive she is, but this situation has placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on her.

Adding to the uncertainty, with Stratford SF14 closing in 2.5 months, she will soon lose both her job and health insurance while still recovering.

How the funds will help

We are creating this fundraiser to help support her during this difficult recovery period. Donations will go toward:
• Hospital and surgery bills
• Rehabilitation and physical therapy
• Transportation and mobility needs
• Basic living expenses while she cannot work

If your child had the chance to learn from Aveona, know how much heart she brings to her work and how deeply she cares for her students. It is our chance to support person, who has given so much to our children.

Even a small contribution helps. And if you’re unable to donate, sharing this page or visiting her during rehab would mean the world to her.

Thank you for helping our teacher heal and get back on her feet — one step at a time. ❤️
