Hello! My name is Huanvy Phan, and I will be a first-year Ethnic Studies teacher at Oakland International High School next year! As you probably know, most teachers do not receive any stipends for classroom supplies and must use their own pocket money to create safe, affirming, and effective learning environments.
OIHS serves newcomer students, all of whom are recent immigrants and multilingual. In defiance of the current attacks against public education, ethnic studies, and immigrant rights, I am asking for your support to start my new classroom!
Funds will go toward the following:
- Basic classroom supplies (e.g: pencils, binders, paper, etc... binders alone will cost me $200 lol)
- Furniture to make my classroom more welcoming (e.g: couch, mini-fridge, microwave)
- Culturally relevant and affirming books that center queer, trans, and/or BIPOC narratives
- Supplies to meet students' basic needs (snacks, menstrual products, hygiene products, school supplies)
- HEPA filters to keep my students safe against COVID and other airborne illnesses
