What started as one swimmer’s small act of kindness became something much bigger.
When JJP swimmer Samantha Sloan learned that Mr. Le — the beloved Pearce custodian — was on his journey to becoming a U.S. citizen and didn’t even own a suit, she wanted to help. That simple idea sparked the JJP Swim-A-Thon.
Mr. Le is a quiet, joyful presence on campus. He shows up every day to do work that often goes unnoticed, and somehow he’s still the one lifting everyone else up with smiles and high-fives. He walks or bikes more than an hour each way to work because he loves this school and its people. He even turned down a job closer to home because JJ Pearce is his community.
When Coach Ewing noticed Mr. Le was suddenly absent, he learned that serious health issues had kept him out of work for many weeks. The swim team knew immediately: this was who they needed to rally around.
Students, families, staff, alumni, and team parents came together to organize the Swim-A-Thon. For over an hour, swimmers logged more than 4,000 meters — nearly 2.5 miles — each lap a thank you to someone who quietly gives so much.
