Support The Historic Mother African Union Church After Devastating Fire
On behalf of the official Church Board, Trustee Board, and Finance Committee of the Historic Mother African Union Church, we share with profound sorrow that in the early morning hours of May 17, 2026, our beloved church home at 812 North Franklin Street in Wilmington, Delaware, suffered a devastating fire resulting in catastrophic damage to this sacred and historic institution.
For generations, the Historic Mother African Union Church has stood as far more than a physical structure. It has served as a spiritual home, a refuge of hope, healing, worship, and community empowerment for countless individuals and families throughout Wilmington and beyond. Founded within the rich legacy of the independent Black church movement connected to Peter Spencer and the historic August Quarterly tradition, this congregation has long represented resilience, liberation, faith, and service to humanity.
While we are deeply heartbroken by the magnitude of this loss, we remain overwhelmingly grateful to God that no lives were lost and that our community was protected during this tragic event.
As we begin the long and difficult journey of recovery and rebuilding, we humbly ask our local community, extended partners, friends, and supporters across the nation to continue lifting our congregation in prayer. We remain steadfast in our belief that although our physical sanctuary has been damaged, the spirit, mission, and legacy of Mother African Union Church remain unshaken.
Should you feel led to support our rebuilding and restoration efforts in any capacity, your generosity and partnership would be sincerely appreciated as we work faithfully to restore this historic pillar of faith and community service for future generations.
In the coming days, the Historic Mother African Union Church will begin coordinated efforts to rebuild, restore, and continue serving the community with renewed strength and unwavering faith. We are sincerely grateful for the extraordinary outpouring of love, compassion, and support already being shown during this incredibly difficult moment in our church’s history.
