We are raising funds on behalf of a brave mother of two young children who is working to escape a dangerous domestic violence situation. To protect her safety, we are keeping her identity anonymous.
The Situation
This mother has been isolated and controlled by an abusive partner who:
- Caused her to lose her previous job by interfering with her remote work and damaging work equipment
- Uses sleep deprivation as a control tactic, deliberately disrupting her rest while caring for a 1-year-old and 4-year-old
- Steals her WIC card and other essential resources, preventing her from accessing food assistance and other support services meant for her and her children
- Has made it unsafe for her to remain in her current situation
- Has left her without family support or resources
She has been on her own since age 17, showing incredible resilience and independence throughout her life. Sleep deprivation is a recognized form of psychological torture that severely impacts physical health, mental clarity, emotional regulation, and more. This deliberate tactic has made every aspect of her life more difficult and dangerous.
She has taken the incredibly difficult but necessary step to prioritize her and her children's safety by planning to leave this dangerous environment. She is currently navigating the divorce process and working within the court system, though as we all know, these systems often move slowly and don't always provide the immediate protection and resources families in crisis desperately need.
Having experienced foster care herself, she understands firsthand how systems can fail the most vulnerable. Despite these challenges, she has always been someone who gives back to her community - the same community she now needs to lean on for mutual aid and direct support during this critical time.
Immediate Transportation Crisis
- Her car's power steering has failed, making it unsafe and nearly impossible for her to drive
- The vehicle is legally in her name (gifted to her by her late grandfather), giving her ownership, but it requires immediate repairs for her to feel safe driving
- Without reliable transportation, she cannot maintain her newly secured part-time job
- She needs vehicle repairs urgently to ensure safe transportation for herself and her two young children
Recent Progress
She is working with a case manager and housing navigator who advised her that securing employment was essential for accessing stable housing options. She has successfully obtained part-time work - meeting this critical requirement and taking a crucial step toward independence. However, she continues to look for more stable, full-time employment to better support her family's long-term needs.
Why We're Asking for Help
- No family support system available to assist during this time
- Child protective services are involved and supportive of her plan to create a safer environment
- Time is of the essence - every day without reliable transportation threatens her ability to work and provide for her children, as well as physically leave this dangerous situation
