Support Mortellus' Fight for Justice

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

My name is Heather and Mortellus is a dear friend and spiritual family member of mine. I am setting up this fund to raise money for legal fees and incidentals for Mortellus and their family in their legal fight against a charter school in their hometown.

Earlier this year their six year old children were outed by staff members, which put their family in danger and creating a hostile and dangerous environment for the children by stoking public outrage and aggression toward the family. Currently, they need records from the school to file police reports, federal FERPA and Title IX complaints, and to generally seek justice for this situation, but the school is refusing to disclose the necessary information in violation of FOIA and Public Records/Sunshine laws. Mortellus has found an attorney to take this case, but this means needing to pay legal fees. Like many of us, their financial resources are limited, pulling on household resources as well.

This $2000 being asked for is a beginning sum, as that we don’t know how much this will cost over time.

For those of you who don’t know the story, please read on, and help us to fight the good fight against bigotry and hate.

In gratitude,
Heather

Here is their story:
In early June, Mortellus and spouse Joe, found out that their 6 year old twins had been the subject of much discussion. Their Sun and Moon are sweet, funny, creative souls. They love butterflies and spiders. Rainbows and flowers. They love freely, and are delightful little humans.
The twins were about to enter Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) for kindergarten. When Mortellus and Joe visited the school, they pointed out a lack of family bathroom. It was noted that it was likely to be added at the grammar level soon. Also, the lower grades have a bathroom in the classrooms. Mortellus also noted that their children, regardless of assigned gender, enjoyed wearing skirts and dresses frequently. They were informed that the uniform policy was non-gendered, and that it would not be an issue. When asked if students are sorted by gender, boys line up here, girls there stating that one of their twins had been rather fluid with pronouns, flitting back and forth as it pleased them, and only recently settling into a preference.

Over a month later they found out that staff members had leaked confidential and identifying information about their family to the general public. Gender identity, sexuality, religious practices, and more, laid bare for the world to see all without Mortellus and Joe knowing, or having been informed, at all. The details of the conversation between parents and faculty were not only publicly shared, they were twisted to fit a narrative that simply didn’t exist.
