A Journey of Hope for Morgan
Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,
The time has come to share something deeply personal and incredibly important. As many of you know, my daughter Morgan was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease in the spring of 2024, shortly before completing her freshman year of college. The specific name of her diagnosis’s are rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. This news turned our world upside down.
Since her diagnosis, she has had to put college on the back burner. Morgan has been under the care of an exceptional nephrology team in Boston. We've made frequent trips for check-ups, lab work, and treatments, and we are grateful for the dedication and compassion of every provider who’s been part of her journey. The search for a living donor began almost immediately—and after months of testing and hope—Morgan’s father, Brad, was found to be a match.
We recently received the news that Brad has officially been accepted as Morgan’s kidney donor. The transplant is scheduled for September of this year. A relief that he is able to give our daughter the greatest gift of all—life. It is, without question, the best news we could have hoped for. At the same time, it’s an incredibly emotional and daunting road ahead.
Morgan will need time to recover, and as her primary caregiver, I will need to take time away from work as well. While we are fortunate to receive paid family medical leave, it only covers a portion of our income—leaving us with significant financial gaps at a time when our focus needs to be on healing and recovery.
Morgan is a hardworking Starbucks barista, and I work as a manager at a group home supporting older women with developmental disabilities. Like many families, we live paycheck to paycheck. Our insurance is helpful, but high out-of-pocket costs, student loans, and everyday expenses make this time even more challenging.
That’s why, after much thought, we’ve decided to start a GoFundMe. This is not something we take lightly, and we understand that times are hard for so many. If you’re able to contribute—no matter the amount—it would mean the world to us. Every dollar will go toward:
-Covering our household bills while we’re out of work
-Morgan’s car payment and student loans
-Travel to and from her many medical appointments in Boston
-out of pocket costs that we have to meet before insurance will cover
-the many medications Morgan will need to sustain her newly transplanted kidney and to keep her blood pressure under control
We are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received so far—from kind words to shared stories, to simply holding us in your thoughts. Whether you can donate, share Morgan’s story, or keep our family in your prayers, know that your support lifts us up during this overwhelming time. It is difficult to put pride aside and ask friends, family and strangers to help us navigate this difficult situation but like many others we just don’t have those kind of funds.
Our greatest wish is for Morgan to have the healthy, joyful future she deserves. She’s only 19, with so much life ahead of her. We want to see her thrive, chase her dreams, and experience all the beauty this world has to offer.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for walking beside us.
With love and gratitude from a mom who is trying her best,
Laura
