Dear friends, family, and community members,
Through my involvement with an independent, non-sectarian organization- Indiana Center for Middle East Peace (ICMEP), I have decided to travel in solidarity with the Palestinian people to Palestine and Israel on the ICMEP’s annual Solidarity Tour.
This event has taken place for 20 years by the organization's brave leader Michael Spath DMin., PhD. In their own words ICMEP is “A voice of conscience for peace, justice, human rights, and intercultural understanding”. My involvement with the group began in October 2023 after the Oct. 7th Hamas attack and proceeding Israeli war on Gaza. ICMEP promptly initiated weekly protests outside the Fort Wayne courthouse, demanding a permanent ceasefire, which I began attending. Going in cold on the facts, history, and truth of the situation, I quickly learned and unlearned about the 77-year-long struggle for Palestinian self-determination amidst an Israeli ethnic cleansing and settler-colonialism regime.
No matter your level of understanding of the situation, I warmly welcome you to support me in whatever way you feel possible. The trip costs about $5,000 and I am receiving a scholarship from ICMEP for $2,300. I am paying for $400-500 but need another $2,300 to bring it all together. Please consider donating any amount you are comfortable with (big or small, all is deeply appreciated) to help me raise $2,300. All funds will go towards my airfare and the cost of the numerous trip activities planned. If I exceed my goal- I will donate the remaining funds to Indiana Center for Middle East Peace, whose own donations go directly to Palestinians and Palestinian supporters.
The theme of this trip is to “Come see, go tell”. In Palestine and Israel I will meet Dr. Spath’s expansive network of Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Palestinian and Israeli friends who are all voices for human rights and non-violent social change. In the pursuit of the ICMEP mission, I will go meet these individuals, hear their stories, and come home and share them with all of you.
Thus, upon my return, I will arrange a Zoom call with anybody who is interested to talk about my trip, its meaning and impact on me, and answer any questions and enter any conversations with you. If I am able, I will also be writing in real time about the experiences and post them as a blog; access to Wifi and free-time are possible barriers to this endeavor but I will do what I can!
This journey has always been important for every tour taken since 2004, but especially this year with everything that has happened to Palestinians in Gaza as well as our government’s current “plans” for the further control of Palestinians’ livelihood, culture, and land. Remembering them, standing with them and sharing their goal for basic human rights is something I believe we should all care deeply about.
With much love,
Morgan
