My partner Barri and I are fundraising for our 5 year old cat MooMoo. We adopted MooMoo about 3 weeks ago from the Animal Rescue League of Berks County and he has been nothing but the perfect cat for us. He is cuddly, loving, playful, sometimes a little fiesty (which has earned him the nickname Moocifer), but overall the sweetest cat.
Last Monday, he started having issues urinating, straining and crying while trying to relieve himself. We made an emergency vet appointment where, after examination and ultrasounds, they informed us MooMoo was suffering from struvites, which are calcium deposits in his bladder. They advised that this could lead to a complete urinary blockage requiring emergency surgery or even result in death. However, his care team was optimistic we would not need to pursue surgery as his condition was caught early. We were sent home with some pain and anti-inflammatory medications, new prescription wet and dry food, and instructions to buy a water fountain to encourage hydration.
MooMoo was doing well after this visit. Though he was still symptomatic, he was presumably getting better with his medication treatment, new diet, and extra water fountain. Today, Friday April 17th, MooMoo had cried out in severe pain while in his litter box and became unable to pass urine. We were advised to bring MooMoo in for an emergent examination, wherein we were informed he had developed a blockage and immediate surgery would be the only option to save his life.
While the team did their best to keep the procedure minimally invasive and disruptive for MooMoo, the vet informed us the blockage ended up being more severe than they initially thought. They indicated that all the small calcium deposits clumped together into one large formation. As such, more invasive catheterization was necessary to clear the blockage. The procedure was successful thankfully, but he had to be transferred to an emergency animal hospital where he is currently receiving an additional 36 hours of catheterization, IV fluids, and other supportive care measures.
As any pet parent can relate to, we would do anything to save MooMoo’s life. However, these vet appointments, the procedure, and hospital admission have been a very large, unexpected expense to us. If anybody has the resources to help fund his healthcare expenses, we would be tremendously grateful for any assistance that can be offered. We are hoping MooMoo will join us back in our home and make a full recovery quickly. Thank you all!
