Support Monroe's Psychiatric Service Dog Journey
Donation protected
When times are hard, sometimes all you need is a friend. I already have my friend, but I need your help getting him trained to support me as a psychiatric service dog.
Some background: In 2017, I found the strength to leave a horrifically abusive relationship with my toddler son in tow. Being strong for my son was what kept me going each day, but the constant fear that I had become accustomed to never left me. I continued to battle a state of perpetual unease and anxiety. In 2022, I experienced my first panic attack, which set back the progress I had made as I relived painful memories all over again. It was the first attack of many to come. But, undeterred, it helped lead me down a new path to navigating support for working through my past trauma. Months later I was diagnosed with depression, and chronic PTSD. In August 2023, I brought home a dog: Monroe, an Australian Shepherd, now 1.5 years old. The immeasurable joy any dog can bring to a home was immediate for both me and my son, but it quickly became apparent that there was something extra special about Monroe. Why we chose him, of all dogs, must be fate. Monroe naturally shadows me around the house and reaches out to me, to comfort me, before a panic attack sets in. I mentioned this to his trainer at puppy school and she suggested I look into having him trained as a service dog since he was already naturally inclined to support me.
Training a service dog requires a significant commitment of time, dedication, and resources. Over the next 12 to 18 months, Monroe and I will be participating in a program with the Dog Alliance in Cedar Park, TX—one of only five accredited “train your own” programs in the United States. This exceptional program comes at a cost of $5,000, which is beyond my current financial means.
With great respect, I invite you to consider making a donation—of any amount that feels right for you. Your support, combined with contributions from others, will allow Monroe and I to work alongside credentialed instructors to achieve our service dog certification.
Having Monroe as a trained psychiatric service dog by my side will be life-changing. His support will give me the confidence to navigate work and public spaces, helping me overcome the trauma I experienced earlier in life. This renewed confidence will not only empower me to thrive but also allow me to be the best mom possible for my son.
Monroe will be trained to:
- Alert me to rising cortisol levels before a panic attack
- Provide Deep Pressure Therapy for grounding
- Act as a protective buffer in social situations
- Interrupt panic behaviors
- Signal me to exit overwhelming environments.
Your generosity will help Monroe and I become an unstoppable team. Thank you for considering this opportunity to change our lives for the better!
