Support Mojann’s Legal Defense Fund

Hello, we are Bananach.

We are a queer punk band from Indonesia. Our band members and crews consist of activist friends, musicians and artists who are involved in the punk subcultures in Bandung, West Java and Denpasar, Bali. We need your support and solidarity during a difficult time. Our guitarist, Mojann (they/them), is a tattoo artist, visual artist and music producer who currently has found themselves facing legal trouble due to a recent incident involving law enforcement. We believe in their innocence and want to ensure they receive a fair and just legal defence. We need the total amount of Rp 200.000.000,00 or equivalent to €12.500 to help their safety and community safety too.

Background / Chronology

In Indonesia, the possession of cannabis and its other varieties and products are illegal, and the police consistently crack down on users rather than targeting the bigger players in the drug trade. The Indonesian Police and State also institutionalise deeply repressive stigma towards users of cannabis, instead of addressing more systemic issues behind the drug trade.

Mojann and their partner found themselves caught in this unjust system. On Thursday, May 25, 2023, they experienced a police raid in their own residence. The police, known for their aggressive tactics, subjected Mojann and their partner, Lanang, to not only legal consequences but also physical brutality. The officers ravaged their house, forcibly took them into custody, and they endured three days in jail. The consequences of the violence they suffered has created both emotional turmoil of imprisonment and physical injuries from the abuse inflicted upon them by the police. Mojann and Lanang experienced police brutality in their own home. By using our band’s money that we have worked on for 9 years and selling a motorcycle, we were able to make bail for Mojann.

However, as of now Lanang is still in custody of the police and is currently housed in a local prison. Furthermore, Lanang is expected to pay 200 million IDR (€12.500) in order to make bail that is due on Tuesday May 30, 2023 or Lanang will be sentenced to prison. Throughout Monday, May 29, 2023, Bananach’s members, family, and friends all over Bali and Bandung have organised a fund to collect said significant and heavy amounts of money. Mojann went to the office on Tuesday May 30, 2023 at 12PM GMT+8, while also juggling to survive day to day life, experiencing trauma due to police brutality, and losing job opportunities as these issues are very stigmatising and frightening in the community because of state repression. The due date is getting pushed back in the meantime and still in process to gather more money for these funds.
