Just one day after bringing home her newly adopted puppy, Mochi, Annie was faced with every pet owner’s worst nightmare.

At only 9 weeks old, Mochi suddenly developed labored breathing, began coughing up thick phlegm, and spiked a life-threatening fever of 106°F. Annie rushed him to the emergency vet, where X-rays revealed he had bilateral pneumonia.

He was immediately hospitalized and put on IV fluids and strong antibiotics to stabilize him. Vets believe it may be a recurrence of aspiration pneumonia, a condition that nearly killed Mochi in foster care just weeks earlier—a history Annie was never told about before adopting him.

Annie had only been with Mochi for a single weekend. As a recent college graduate just starting a new job, she hadn’t even had time to set up pet insurance before this medical emergency turned her world upside down.

She did everything right—reacted quickly, got Mochi the urgent care he needed—but now faces thousands in emergency vet bills for a puppy she’s only just begun to love.
