peace + love family. my name is morgan butler and i am a black, queer, genderfluid lesbian creator , curator and conjurer from washington, dc whose work is rooted in healing-centered (rather than trauma-informed) pleasure activism.
for the past 4 years, i have burnt myself out working for understaffed, under-resourced nonprofits, hoping that i could enact change from the inside. without going into specifics, this has been proven to be virtually impossible, and for years i’ve had to endure late / inconsistent payments, misogynoir, police violence, physical injury (heat exhaustion, sprained limbs, laryngitis) and sustained emotional / mental trauma. throughout all this, i have done my job(s) brilliantly, successfully and passionately because i have been committed to youth advocacy via creative arts.
the past 5 months, i have been working through the grief of losing both my great-grandparents in may, experiencing isolation after my mother and grandmother (my biggest support systems) both moved cross country, and the news that my current job has mismanaged funds and are no longer able to support my fellowship without tripling my workload while simultaneously halfing my hours AND pay. after deliberating with my mom and chosen community, i was affirmed in my choice to quit and will now be facing unemployment at the end of july.
for two years i’ve been tweaking an original creative writing + radical healing justice curriculum, and now more than ever does it seem like the most divine time to actually teach it! i am setting the intention to fully commit to healing-centered pleasure activism, and i want to do this by starting ‘EARTHSIDE’ — a virtual academy rooted in teaching transcendence through tarot! over the course of 6 months, i will be facilitating monthly workshops around The Major Arcana and the four points of my activism;
pleasure - prioritizing the need to feel good and do good
magic - the universal life force that protects and sustains all of us
healing - of self, or community, of world
culture - the movements of people, places, and patterns.
the funds raised in this campaign will be used to:
- build out my working space! (to do this work i need a desk, computer monitor and webcam)
- take a two-week sabbatical to finish my curriculum! (i have only had 4-weeks paid vacation in 4-years and would love to be virtually unreachable + not have anxiety about it -- who knows, i might even finish my book!)
- secure resources (books, journals, tarot decks, crystals etc + pay mentors / guest speakers) for EARTHSIDE students!
- pay my rent! (my intention is to do this work full-time, including making accessible resources for folks unable to attend EARTHSIDE. this means i will also have to pay and sustain myself through this work)
asking for help, especially as a black femme person, is a scary feat. this feels like a step forward towards personal peace. i look forward to further committing to the liberation of all folks, EARTHSIDE and beyond!
