Our friend and valued community member MM Serra — filmmaker, educator, and Executive Director of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative for over 30 years — has recently experienced a number of significant health challenges. As a result, she has had to undergo a series of operations and extensive rehabilitation. Serra currently has 24-hour care and will need to pay for a home-health aide and physical therapy to assist her with household tasks and mobility for the next several months.
We are asking for your help and support to raise money for Serra in order to ensure her recovery and well-being. In addition to running The Film-Makers’ Cooperative for over three decades, Serra has taught courses on cinema at The New School since 1998 and has made over 30 films, which have screened at such prestigious venues as MoMA, Sundance, and the Tribeca Film Festival. The Coop was honored to celebrate Serra’s career and legacy earlier this year with two programs at our screening room, hosted in conjunction with the recent publication of Framework: The Journal of Cinema and Media, Vols. 1 & 2: "A Festschrift for MM Serra." We were also honored to recently collaborate with Serra and FMC filmmaker-member Erica Schreiner on a month-long film series for MoMA titled “Queer and Uncensored,” wherein Serra and Schreiner generously showcased over 30 films from our collection.
MM Serra is a leading light in the New York and global experimental film community, and her contributions to our organization and the art form at large cannot be understated. We ask that you join us in rallying around our friend and former director in this time of need by donating to assist Serra with the sizable expenses she faces in the wake of these significant health challenges.
