Starting on February 9th, the educators at MLK will join over 6,000 San Francisco educators in a strike for safe and stable schools. We are fighting for safe class size limits, manageable SPED case loads, sanctuary language protecting immigrant students from ICE, housing for families, health care for our own dependents, and salaries that will allow us to stay in the city and provide consistent education for students. We have been working without a contract for a year, and SFUSD's negligence has forced us to take the last step necessary to secure our contract.
Many of our educators live paycheck-to-paycheck, and will be sacrificing financially in this advocacy work that benefits not just them, but our students and their families. We are not sure how long the strike will last, and many educators will struggle to pay for childcare, rent, food, utilities, and other bills during the strike. In the event the strike is averted, we can refund donations.
We work every day to provide the best education to our students, and are willing to withhold our labor short-term to demand that the district provide us with the resources that our kids need. However, it comes at a cost, with some educators suffering more than others. Please join us in supporting the dedicated educators who fight every day for our schools.
The funds donated will go to an account managed by Strike Captain René Peña-Govea. Together with the union reps, she will review applications by MLK staff and disburse funds directly to those staff members who are most in need on a rolling basis until the funds are gone. This could be a cash disbursement, or through staff's preferred methods such as Venmo. René has the contact numbers and emails of all MLK staff, and is in direct daily contact with each of them. Your donation ensures the neediest staff is able to strike for the stable, fully-funded schools our students deserve.
