In Loving Memory of Professor Steve Swingle: Supporting Mitsuyo, Nicole, and Jessica

Our hearts are heavy as we share the news of the passing of Professor Steve Swingle on April 16, 2025. Steve, a beloved physics professor at City College, touched the lives of countless students and colleagues with his passion for teaching, his kindness, and his unwavering patience.

Steve’s journey is one of a discovery of a passion for physics and a passion for sharing his love of physics with students. Despite many hardships, Steve pursued his academic dreams with fervor. His passion for physics and mathematics ignited during his time at a Southern California community college, leading him to transfer to UC Berkeley, where he earned his BS in Physics. He continued his academic journey at UC Santa Barbara for graduate school, ultimately discovering his true calling: sharing the wonders of physics with college students.

For years, Steve dedicated himself to teaching at various community colleges in Southern California, finally finding his professional home at City College. As his loving wife, Mitsuyo, shared, Steve truly felt he had found his place. He cherished his job, his students, and his colleagues, creating a positive and engaging learning environment for everyone he encountered. Steve was more than just an educator; he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration to many.

Tragically, during this past semester, Steve’s health took a critical turn. With profound sadness, we must share that Steve passed away.

Steve leaves behind his devoted wife, Mitsuyo, and their two precious young daughters, Nicole (a bright 4th grader) and Jessica (a promising 10th grader). Their futures, once filled with the love and guidance of their father, now hold an unimaginable void.

This fundraiser has been established to provide crucial financial support for Mitsuyo, Nicole, and Jessica as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. The funds raised will help alleviate the immediate burdens of funeral and medical expenses, as well as provide ongoing support for Nicole and Jessica’s future educational needs and overall well-being.

Steve was a truly special individual – a dedicated teacher, a loving husband, a devoted father, and a kind soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
