Support Mitchell’s Journey to Recovery

On February 21, our younger brother Mitchell’s life changed in an instant when he suffered a serious spinal cord injury. We are raising funds to support his journey through recovery.

Mitchell and his wife Abby live in Virginia, but during a visit with our family in West Virginia Mitchell suffered a traumatic fall that resulted in a C5-C6 incomplete spinal fracture and dislocation (AISA B). He was quickly rushed to Ruby Memorial Hospital where he underwent an 8 hour surgery the same night. The quick response from first responders and trauma team stabilized his spine but not without damage that will require a long and arduous recovery.

Mitchell has always been the person who shows up for others. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina, Mitchell and his equally selfless wife, Abby, displayed incredible community action and passion for others. Despite suffering their own losses, they helped organize and operate an aid station that started as a water table and exploded into a regional donation center for community members in need. For all they have done to support others, we ask now that their communities come together to support them.

Professionally, Mitchell dedicated the first 10 years of his career to supporting at‑risk youth — first through wilderness therapy, then by leading a pilot program to deliver fresh food directly to low‑income families in his community. Helping others isn’t just something he does. It’s who he is.

Mitchell and Abby’s love story was born in the outdoors. They’ve hiked the Pacific Crest Trail together, got engaged on the rim of Crater Lake, and were married during COVID among the mist of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their partnership is a steady, grounding force — an unshakeable rock.

Now, Mitchell needs our help.

Although Mitchell has lost some of his physical capacity, his spirit is as strong as ever. Even in the face of adversity, Mitchell has continued to show tremendous strength and motivation to fight for his recovery. The future is uncertain but we are optimistic, hopeful, and motivated to face this journey as a family.

The man who has given so much of himself to his community, to his work, and to the people he loves, now needs the world to give just a little back.

While we don’t yet know the exact costs that may be incurred due to Mitchell’s injury, funds raised will go to support medical bills, Mitchell’s time in rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta and any potential home modifications needed for accessibility. We are grateful for anything you may be able to offer and are humbled by all donations, no matter the size.
