We are reaching out during one of the most challenging times our family has ever faced. Last year, during pregnancy, my wife Missy was diagnosed with a mass in the back of her brain. After further evaluation, doctors determined it to be a cyst. While not cancerous, it continued to grow and began causing serious complications. On March 30th, Missy underwent brain surgery. She is currently recovering in the Neuro ICU and will continue her recovery in a step-down unit before coming home. While we are grateful the surgery is behind us, the road ahead will take time. Missy will be out of work until at least May.

Missy is a dedicated paramedic who has spent her career responding to emergencies and helping others on their worst days. Unfortunately, due to her position at a private hospital, she does not receive paid FMLA or disability benefits. This means she will be without income during her recovery. As a first responder family with a young daughter at home, this puts us in a very difficult position financially. We are facing challenges keeping up with everyday expenses such as rent, utilities, groceries, medical-related costs, and childcare.

As first responders, we are used to being the ones who show up and help others. This is one of the first times we’ve had to ask for help ourselves.
