On Wednesday, July 17th, I got done with work at 6 am and came home to find Miss Mabel unable to stand or control her front legs. She was a little slow to move the day before, but we thought she just didn’t feel good as she still had full function. That morning was different. I picked her up and set her on the ground, and she immediately fell face first. We took her right to our vet, who checked her over and said she had a spinal injury somewhere in her neck. We aren’t exactly sure how this happened, but it is fairly common for dachshunds to have back problems. Our vet recommended we take her to a neurologist in Madison, WI, as she was going to need surgery. We packed up the car, dropped Apollo off at doggy daycare, and rushed Miss Mabel to Madison. At the vet, they performed an MRI and found she has a bulging disk in her back that was putting pressure on her spinal cord, and she was essentially paralyzed from the neck down. They suggested immediate spinal surgery, and we gave the go-ahead. Miss Mabel came through the surgery very well and is on the road to recovery, but the downside to such excellent care is the cost. Total vet bill is $8,977. While we did not hesitate to agree to this amount, it is a HUGE financial burden we have now taken on. We would gladly make the same call again and again, but any money you can donate will help us alleviate the stress of this on ourselves. Even 5 bucks helps. Every little bit will go to paying down our newly acquired debt and Mabel’s post surgery care as it is a lengthy recovery. Thank you for taking the time to read through this.
