Miriam Berg, a lifelong pacifist and steadfast anti-capitalist, has always walked a path of profound principle, choosing a life of humble simplicity rather than contributing to a system she believes feeds war and division. Now, after hip surgery, she faces the need for long-term care without the cushion of savings. Her children are raising funds to support her, hoping to ease the burden for a woman who gave so much of herself in the quiet service of peace and justice.
A contributing member of the Berkeley Friends Meeting for over 60 years, Miriam is a musician, author and mathematician. Berkeley has been her home since the mid 1960s, and she is the 1st born yet sole surviving member of the Fitz family. Of her 3 siblings, she lost her brother David in a plane crash in 1971, her sister Phyllis 5 years later to cancer, and most recently, her brother Herm passed peacefully at his home in Oregon. Her 3 children live in the Bay Area.
Her work as a computer programmer turned fiscal manager for a nonprofit organization was an important part of her life for many years, and her passion for folk dance led her to teach into her '80s.
Miriam's Medicare will run out soon and her care will cost $100/day. A contribution of any amount is greatly appreciated.
