As many of you know, Milan Calloway was diagnosed a few years ago with Systemic Lupus, leading most recently to end-stage renal failure. A few weeks ago, Milan was found unresponsive in her home after first responders forced their way into her apartment. There is no way of knowing how long Milan was unresponsive, but we are thankful she was found when she was. Milan was taken to George Washington University Hospital in DC, spending over a week in ICU fighting sepsis and pneumonia. The sepsis has proven to be a vicious enemy, resisting all courses of antibiotics. The pneumonia is still present, depleting her already weakened immune system. Most recently, Milan underwent heart surgery to remove infection from her heart. The medical team believes this is the source of her infection, and once removed, antibiotics will work to eliminate her sepsis. Most recently, Milan's medical team started investigating if her lupus is causing activity in her brain and spine.
Nellie, Milan's mother, has been by her side the last month, fighting right along with her. Nellie resides in Columbus, Ohio, but has been staying in DC to be with Milan during this time. Nellie has been unable to work while caring for Milan at the hospital. As many know, staying with someone in the hospital is expensive, especially when not working and being away from home. From parking fees to food, everything adds up quickly.
Milan's recovery will require a long hospital stay, needing to go to a rehabilitation center after. All will be expensive for Milan and her family. At the end of 2024, Milan unfortunately lost her job as well as her health care coverage. Help is always hard to ask for, especially for a strong woman such as Milan. Any help you can provide will go to Milan's care and Nellie's expenses to stay by her side while she recovers.
