Support Mikiah's Travel Abroad Experience to Johannesburg

Hello, my name is Mikiah Morton, and I’m an outgoing and passionate rising Senior at Morgan State University, majoring in Cybersecurity Intelligence Management. I’m originally from Maryland and deeply committed to supporting and uplifting Black women in STEM.
Unfortunately, due to Executive Order 14151 — “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” signed by President Trump — my Study Abroad opportunity in Johannesburg, South Africa, was defunded. This program was specifically designed to support Black women in STEM, making its cancellation especially disheartening. As someone who strives to build community among Black women pursuing STEM careers both domestically and internationally, this setback has only strengthened my resolve.
I’m reaching out to ask that you consider investing in my Study Abroad experience. Your support will enable me to share my skills in STEM with the Johannesburg community while continuing my mission of engaging with cultures and communities across the African Diaspora.
My journey has always been grounded in faith, service, sisterhood, social action, and scholarship. Throughout my time at Morgan, I’ve remained committed to academic excellence and cultural exploration. I am a Martin D. Jenkins Scholar, a proud member of the Clara I. Adams Honors Program, where I also serve on the Honors Council. I serve as the Campus Events Coordinator for F.U.T.U.R.E. (Females United to Uplift, Reshape, and Educate), am an active member of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), and a Spring 2025 Initiate of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
I’ve previously studied abroad in Cuba and London, where I advocated for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and immersed myself in powerful diasporic experiences. These opportunities have shaped me into a more informed, engaged, and service-driven scholar — and I’m eager to continue that growth in Johannesburg.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to support my journey.
