Mike is a dedicated teacher and coach at Burlington High School, known for his passion for sports and his unwavering support for his students and players. He’s a lifelong fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and the Cardinals, and he’s always been the kind of person who would help anyone in need. As an uncle, Mike is a huge part of my kids’ lives, and his kindness and generosity have touched so many people in our community. Many of his former students and athletes still keep in touch, a testament to the positive impact he’s had on those around him.
Last year, Mike was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer. He’s spent the past eight months undergoing intensive treatments, including a stem cell transplant that required a three-week hospital stay. This was supposed to be his first year at Burlington High School, but because of the timing, he hasn’t been able to work or qualify for unemployment or school pay. Our family is raising funds to help cover Mike’s living expenses and the costs of traveling back and forth for his treatments. The financial strain has been especially tough as we’re still coping with the recent loss of our dad in April.
Despite everything, Mike’s outlook remains incredibly positive. His body is responding well to treatment, and we’re optimistic about the future, hoping for a cure. The support from friends, loved ones, and former students has meant the world to him. Every call, message, and visit lifts his spirits. By contributing, you’ll help give Mike the peace of mind to focus on his recovery, knowing that his finances are taken care of and that he can continue to inspire those around him without the added stress of money or work.
