On January 24, our friend, artist, and beloved teacher Mike Rader was struck by a driver who ran a red light while Mike was crossing in the walkway. The driver carried only the state minimum insurance, which was quickly exhausted by just part of Mike’s initial hospital stay. Since then, Mike was unable to teach his Spring semester, took only one trial class this fall semester, and he is still facing a long and challenging recovery. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, including brain bleeds, as well as a separated shoulder, cracked knee, and torn ligaments. His healing journey involves intensive physical therapy for his knee and shoulder; vestibular therapy to help with balance and vertigo; cognitive, occupational, and speech therapy; and counselling for PTSD. Recovery from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) typically takes 12 to 16 months—and often longer. Mike is making steady progress and is even ahead for such injuries, but the financial burden is immense. Funds raised will be allocated toward past-due medical bills, ongoing therapies, and all future bills and therapies necessary for Mike’s recovery. We’re reaching out to our community—friends, former students, fellow artists, colleagues, patrons of the arts, and anyone who has been touched by Mike’s art, teaching, or presence. Please consider helping Mike continue his positive road to recovery. Every contribution, no matter the amount, truly makes a difference. Please help and share this post.
