My other half, Mike Hoene, is currently in the hospital facing a serious infection near his spine, as well as infections in his spine and heart. He’s been there for nearly a week, undergoing multiple CAT scans, MRIs, drainages, and a steady stream of medications, pain management, and antibiotics. The doctors have now placed a PICC line for long-term treatment, which means Mike will need at least six weeks of intensive antibiotics and frequent hospital visits. The hospital is over an hour from our home, so I’ve been making daily drives back and forth, all while trying to keep things together at home.

This sudden health crisis has turned our lives upside down. We’ve both missed a lot of work, and the bills are piling up fast. On top of the medical expenses, we’re facing travel costs, co-pays, deductibles, and the cost of boarding our two beloved corgis while we’re away. Food and basic living expenses have become a challenge, and being so far from our family and friends—over 16 hours away—means we don’t have much local support. Mike is a hard worker who takes pride in everything he does, and he loves spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and hiking. Our family is very close, even though we’re separated by distance, and we’re doing our best to stay strong through this difficult time.
