Support Mike and his Fight against Cancer

Hello family, friends, and supporters of Mike!

As most of you know, Mike was having some trouble taking a deep breath a couple weeks ago and we thought he pulled a muscle in his neck/shoulder/chest. Dawn took him to ER because he started really having trouble. They did X-rays and a CT which found a mass on his lung. They were told to get off island and find an oncologist.

They flew to St Louis the next day and after numerous tests and blood work it was determined he has a large germ cell tumor above his left lung. He has started chemo. He has 5 days of inpatient chemo, 2/3 weeks off, 5 days inpatient chemo, 2/3 weeks off…for 4 cycles. They are hoping to shrink the tumor small of enough to surgically remove it.

So that is the part you may know. If this shock is not stressful enough, they were hit with more bad news. They were told now that his insurance will not cover him at all off island. If you know the island you know that healthcare can be tricky on a good day, but intense cancer treatment is not even an option. So not only is he having to take a leave of absence, he now has no healthcare. Dawn is also being put in a difficult situation. She also is being forced to take a leave of absence in order to be by his side during this difficult time.

With all the appointments, scans, chemo, and surgery in the future, we are hoping to help take some of the financial burden off him so he can focus on kicking cancers ass! Mike is looking at substantial out-of-pocket medical expenses and lost time working. As we know, Mike is a very strong and he doesn’t always like to ask for help – so we are doing it for him!
