More than three years ago, I started a previous GoFundMe for Mike and Tracy Adams to help with their financial needs during Mike’s struggle with multiple myeloma cancer. For those of you that have followed Tracy and Mike on Facebook, you will know he was able to receive the Car T-cell transplant about this time a year ago. He ended up actually going into anaphylactic shock during the transplant. However, praise Jesus the amount of the cells he did receive before they had to stop the transfer was enough for him to actually be considered “cancer free “earlier this year! So even though multiple myeloma is still not considered a curable cancer, after fighting that cancer for a dozen years he was finally cancer free earlier this year. This man has battled cancer for 13 yrs now, but his strength is being tested once again.
About a month ago Mike wasn’t feeling well, enough to the point where he was taken to the emergency room via ambulance where they swiftly determined he had sepsis and pneumonia. He was immediately put into ICU and within 24 hours was on a ventilator. His kidneys were dry and dialysis was started.
It was determined a few days later the cause of the sepsis was a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria Meningitis. (This is not your standard meningitis that we have all heard about, which is bad enough). This is a meningitis on steroids. It’s an infection of the blood and central nervous system and can cause extensive necrosis (extensive tissue death) and in severe cases can lead to amputation.
About two weeks ago a feeding tube peg was installed in his abdomen, the ventilator was removed, and a tracheotomy was put in, and a permanent dialysis port was also put in.
Unfortunately, he has a severe case of necrosis and last week all fingers on his left hand were removed down to nubs, three of his fingers on his right hand were removed down to nubs and his thumb and middle finger on his right hand were shortened, but they were left long enough that he will be able to use those to pinch items. There’s also necrosis on his nose and some grafting was done with that as well. The worst is yet to come still, as this week he is facing another surgery where they are removing both feet up to at least mid calf.
I spoke with Mike via FaceTime before his surgery last week, and it was great to see his eyes are still “him “. He definitely understood he was speaking to me and he mouthed back “I love you” when I told him I loved him. He cannot actually speak at this point due to the tracheotomy so Tracy said she’s doing a lot of lip reading.
Needless to say, Tracy has been off work since the beginning of this and is still off work at this time, however she has exhausted all paid time off days and every day she takes off is unpaid at this point. As anyone could surely imagine, the road ahead of them is an extremely long one which will result in Tracy needing to be with him for appointments, be with him by his side right now and unable to work. Of course, eventually the hope is he will be back home at which time she will be his 100% caretaker.
As we also all know, even though they’re facing this terribly challenging time, the rent and utilities need to be paid, groceries need to be bought, insurance premiums need paid, etc. and they are facing financial ruin without Tracy‘s income.
If anyone can find it in their heart to help out financially, it is greatly appreciated. And if you’re not able to financially help them, please please pray for this family. This man has suffered more than most people do in their lifetime, but it is clear he is a fighter and I believe he can pull through this and in the end a “new normal“ life for him and their family awaits.
Thank you in advance for prayers and your generosity.
