This is Mika, our sweet, goofy, 1 1/2 year old rescue girl who recently tested positive for heartworms. She’s already been through more than any dog her age should. Surrendered in Texas shortly after having puppies, moved states, and now, facing a scary diagnosis.
When Mika was first rescued, her heartworm test came back negative but it turns out the infection just hadn’t developed enough to be detected yet. Now, months later, it’s progressed, and she’s starting a long, expensive 6+ month journey to get better.
Heartworm disease is caused by parasitic worms that are spread through mosquito bites. Once inside the body, these worms settle in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, leading to severe organ damage if left untreated. The treatment process is long - typically 6 months and includes costly vet visits, x-rays, medications, injections, and periods of strict rest. In Mika’s case, we’re also preparing for potential hospital stays.
We weren’t prepared for how expensive this journey would be, especially on such short notice. Treatment can cost $2,000-3,500 or more depending on complications, and that doesn’t include follow-up care or unexpected emergencies. If you’re able to donate, share, or simply send love, it would mean the world to us.
Every dollar raised will go directly toward Mika’s medical care, including:
-Bloodwork, chest x-rays, and ultrasounds
-Full blood panel to assess immune and organ function
-Three painful melarsomine injections into her back muscles
-Hospital stays in case of complications, or if reactions to the treatment occur
-Medications- steroids, antibiotics, anti inflammatory meds, pain relief
If you’re able to donate, even a small amount helps so much. And if you can’t give, sharing Mika’s story means the world to us too. Thank you for helping our girl fight for her second chance.
-Mika’s forever family
