Support Miguel's Fight Against Leukemia

Hello everyone! And thank you for visiting our GoFundMe page!

My name is Cheri, and this is my grandson Miguel, who was shockingly diagnosed with Leukemia - B-cell acute lymphoblastic - just 2 weeks before his 16th birthday. I started this GoFundMe to help my daughter with finances during the lengthy rounds of medical treatments and hospital stays, while supporting her son during this despairing time. Your charity would help alleviate the increase in monthly bills, subsidize the loss of income from work, and cover any other unforeseen catastrophic costs caring for her son.

The first week of May this year, our family's life changed overnight. It all started with a worrying phone call from Port St. Lucie High School to his mother Cassie, reporting Miguel had complained of blurred vision throughout the day and recommending she take him to see an eye doctor. Not 10 minutes later, the school phoned again declaring that he was suddenly experiencing total blindness and was being rushed by helicopter to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. She left work immediately for the 2 hour panicked drive to meet her son at the hospital. After several hours of testing, the doctors gave Cassie the devastating news that Leukemia was the cause of his vision loss. Thankfully some of our prayers were answered, and Miguel's vision returned during the emergency 2 week aggressive Chemotherapy treatment.

The current prognosis means Miguel and Cassie will have to stay at Joe DiMaggio Children's hospital 2 weeks per month, and return for testing 2 days out of the remaining 2 weeks per month, for the next 2 years. Unfortunately, the doctors have explained Miguel will most likely miss his junior and even senior year of high school, and will be completing his work from home (or hospital), to be able to graduate with his class on time. Even with his strong will and positive mindset, this is a heavy weight for a teenager to carry! A passionate track & field athlete as a freshman and sophomore, this tragedy also struck in his first year of ROTC - and having to give that up along with his dream of joining the military has been incredibly hard on him.

Cassie is a single mother and unable to continue working at this point. She has been struggling since Miguel's diagnosis, though her brother and I have been helping out as much as we can. She doesn't have a car, so she has been borrowing one of ours (for weeks at a time) to be there with Miguel during treatment. Her rent is $1,500 a month, plus utilities food/gas/phone etc., and it's just not financially manageable for us to continue to help her without reaching out and humbly asking for your assistance. We appreciate any small generosity out of the kindness of your hearts to help our family get through this trying time - Team Miguel!!
Thank you in advance for your consideration, prayers & support!!
