Support Diversity of Thought at U.S. Service Academies
UPDATE -- this initiative is growing! Several USNA Grads had the same thought to collect funds to get these books into the hands of Midshipmen. We are pooling our resources. If you donated here, those monies will go to the larger effort here:
Thank you!
---
As a result of the Presidential Executive Order ‘Ending Radical And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing’ and associated U.S. Department of Defense policies, well over 300 books have been removed (banned?) from the U.S. Naval Academy’s Nimitz Library.
We are a group of concerned U.S. Naval Academy Alumni, who believe our nation’s leaders of tomorrow should not lead with blinders on. Naval Academy Midshipmen should be exposed to a diversity of thoughts and ideas to harness the full potential of their own leadership style.
The banning of books at our nation’s service academies is troubling. We are asking your donation so we can send every Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy a copy of Martin Luther King’s autobiography.
THEY CAN'T FRY US ALL...
UPDATE (4/4):
The list of removed books from the U.S. Naval Academy Library has been released. You can click the link below and review for yourself.
There are no books on this list about Martin Luther King Jr. or Jackie Robinson. The U.S. Naval Academy ingrained in me the principles of integrity and accountability. So I wanted to make sure I made my mistake public - and own it.
But, we still have 381 other titles to think about. We are combing through this list to find one book that we can rally around. They're all worthy of our attention, but we need a 'spokesperson'.
The real travesty here is that DOD Leadership is attempting to 'shield the eyes' of the Midshipmen from these titles, rather than trusting the Midshipmen to discern for themselves what's important. U.S. Naval Academy graduates will be thrust into leadership positions, leading young Sailors and Marines who have been exposed to these ideas -- and need to be prepared to lead through the fog.
